At 16, Lorde aka Ella Yelich-O\'Connor was ironically not old enough to buy a ticket to her own show, yet her album "Pure Heroine" released September 30 in the US and October 28 in the UK is undoubtedly going to be one of the year's best releases. I better understand the wonder of Milan audiences attending 16 year old Mozart's opera, "Lucio Silla" at the Teatro Regio Ducal in 1772, seeing this talented teenager produce magnificent music from behind her unruly mop of hair. For while Lorde's music conjures the dreamy outsiderdom of Lana Del Rey, and the quirky intelligence of Regina Spektor, with it's minimal orchestration, heartfelt lonely lyricism, dark electrobeat and melodic overlay, it also taps into the teen and universal alienation of JD Salinger, creating a sound all her own. One wonders how strange it must be for Lorde to be so far removed from her New Zealand home, performing to a crowd of adults in an adult club abroad. What is undoubtedly the case is that Lorde's music is pure poetry, and the evident pride New Zealanders' take in their native daughter is well-placed.
